How It Works
Different ingredients weigh different amounts per cup because of their density. Flour is light and fluffy, while honey is heavy and dense. This converter uses standard baking densities to get accurate volume measurements from weights.
The Formula
Cups = Weight in grams / Grams per cup for that ingredient
Variables
- Flour — 125 g per cup
- Sugar — 200 g per cup
- Butter — 227 g per cup (2 sticks)
- Brown Sugar — 220 g per cup (packed)
- Honey — 340 g per cup
- Cocoa — 86 g per cup (unsifted)
Example
200g of all-purpose flour = 200 / 125 = 1.6 cups, or about 1 and 2/3 cups.
Tips
- These conversions assume the standard scoop-and-level method for dry ingredients.
- Brown sugar density assumes packed. Loosely scooped brown sugar weighs less per cup.
- Sifted flour is lighter than unsifted, so sifted flour has fewer grams per cup.
- A kitchen scale eliminates all guesswork and is the most reliable way to measure.
