How It Works

Halving a recipe sounds easy until you need half of 1/3 cup. This calculator does the math and converts to the most practical measuring tool you actually own.

The Formula

Halved Amount = Original Amount / 2

Variables

  • 1/2 of 1 cup — 1/2 cup (8 tablespoons)
  • 1/2 of 3/4 cup — 6 tablespoons
  • 1/2 of 2/3 cup — 1/3 cup
  • 1/2 of 1/3 cup — 2 tablespoons + 2 teaspoons
  • 1/2 of 1/4 cup — 2 tablespoons

Example

Halving 3/4 cup of sugar: 0.75 / 2 = 0.375 cups = 6 tablespoons. Much easier to measure as tablespoons.

Tips

  • When halving eggs, beat the egg first, then measure out about 1.5 tablespoons for half an egg.
  • Halving baking time is not correct. Reduce time by about 25% and check often.
  • Use a smaller pan when halving baked goods to maintain proper thickness.
  • For leavening agents (baking powder, soda), always halve exactly.
