How It Works
Many recipes from outside the US use metric measurements. This converter handles the most common cooking conversions between metric and imperial systems.
The Formula
Weight: 1 gram = 0.03527 oz; 1 kg = 2.205 lb. Volume: 1 ml = 0.03381 fl oz; 1 liter = 4.227 cups. Temp: F = C x 9/5 + 32.
Variables
- 1 g — 0.03527 ounces
- 1 kg — 2.205 pounds
- 1 ml — 0.03381 fluid ounces
- 1 L — 4.227 US cups
- C to F — Multiply by 9/5, then add 32
Example
A European recipe calls for 250g of flour. That is 250 / 28.35 = 8.82 ounces, which is roughly 2 cups of all-purpose flour.
Tips
- Most non-US recipes measure by weight (grams), which is more accurate than cups.
- A kitchen scale is the single best upgrade for baking accuracy.
- For oven temperatures, 180 C equals about 350 F, the most common baking temperature.
- When converting liquids, remember that 1 liter is just over 4 cups.
