How It Works
When cooking for a crowd or meal prepping, you often need to make multiple batches. This calculator shows ingredient amounts for common multipliers so you can shop and prep efficiently.
The Formula
Batch Amount = Single-Batch Amount x Number of Batches
Variables
- 0.5x — Half batch -- cooking for fewer people
- 1x — Standard recipe (one batch)
- 2x — Double batch -- the most common scaling
- 3x — Triple batch -- good for freezing extras
- 4x — Quadruple batch -- party or event size
Example
A cookie recipe uses 2 cups of flour per batch. For 3 batches: 2 x 3 = 6 cups of flour. For 1.5 batches: 2 x 1.5 = 3 cups.
Tips
- Make one batch first to confirm the recipe works before committing to a big batch.
- Most cookie and muffin recipes scale well up to 4x. Beyond that, mix in stages.
- When batch cooking for the freezer, slightly undercook items so they finish when reheated.
- Buy ingredients in bulk when making 3+ batches to save money.
- Label and date everything that goes into the freezer.
